HISTORY OF AUGUSTA
Augusta is Georgia's second oldest and
second largest city. A city named in honor of Augusta, Princess of Wales, we
are a historic southern city set on the banks of the Savannah River. Augusta
was once the capital of Georgia and has the largest number of historically
significant homes and facilities, such a the Cotton Exchange, Woodrow Wilson's
childhood home, George Walton's home (signer of the Declaration of
Independence) and many more historical places of interest.

Today the city is recognized for its state
of the art medical facilities, its growing business sector and the Masters Golf
Tournament (annually, the first week of April). Augusta is a thriving, growing
city with a great quality of life. The city offers a rich variety of
sophisticated amenities, including a vibrant arts community, a wealth of fine
restaurants, parks and recreation, amusement parks, as well as Clark Hill Lake
with many state parks.

Washington-Wilkes
truly a remarkable place of historic architectural
treasures and landmarks. Step back in time and experience the stirring days of
Colonial America, the Confederacy, and the Victorian Era. These eras are still
alive in grand old homes, tree-shaded streets, historic sites and more in
Washington-Wilkes, Georgia. The world's first cotton gin was perfected by Eli
Whitney on a plantation east of Washington.
ATTRACTIONS
Washington has six bed & breakfasts, two
motels, a historical museum, a historical library, several plantations and
Antebellum homes available to tour. It offers antique stores, historic downtown
square with shops and several annual festivals. Washington has a variety of
local restaurants, offering traditional southern fare, light café
brunch, as well as several international favorites. This lovely small southern
town hosts two annual Tour of Homes, one in April, and our Candlelight
Christmas Dinner and Tour of Homes in December. In December, there is also the
traditional Christmas at Callaway Plantation, set in a bygone era. Washington
also has a very active Little Theatre, with several productions a
year.
EDUCATION
Washington has four public schools,
accessibility to two private schools, as well as six institutions of higher
